NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) Course

Our NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) Course is one of 3 required courses for anyone interested in taking the first steps towards becoming a certified NRA Pistol Instructor.

In this course, we cover:

  • Instructor and program basics: Understanding the NRA Basic Firearm Training Program and NRA policies and procedures.
  • Teaching and training skills: How to use a training team, utilize training materials and aids, and organize a course effectively.
  • Public speaking: Basic public speaking skills, including how to introduce a speaker and overcome challenges.
  • Course preparation: How to prepare to teach, including role-playing exercises to practice what has been learned.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Prerequisite: BIT is a prerequisite for all other NRA instructor courses.
  • No specific certification: The BIT course alone does not certify you to teach a specific firearm course; you must complete additional instructor-level training, specifically the NRA Pistol Instructor Course offered by RFI on 6/14/2026.

*** Successful completion & passing of the NRA Basic Pistol (student-level) course is required to enroll in the Basic Instructor Training (BIT) Course as well as the NRA Pistol Instructor Course. You may sign up for all 3 courses at the same time (if you have not completed any of the required courses).  Additionally, you may sign up for just the BIT Course & Pistol Instructor Course (if you’ve already completed NRA Basic Pistol with RFI or another agency).

*** Proof of completion (ex: course certificate) must be provided to RFI if you have taken the NRA Basic Pistol Course with an outside agency.

Courses only open to New York State residents 21 and up.
